About El Medio Firewise →

Defensible space

Your first 30 feet matter.

The source materials describe defensible space as a system: the immediate area around a structure is treated differently from the managed landscape beyond it.

Zone 0 • 0–5 feet

Keep it noncombustible.

The immediate perimeter is the most critical area for reducing ember ignition opportunities.

  • Use noncombustible hardscape near structures.
  • Keep the area clear of vegetation and combustible groundcover.
  • Remove accumulated debris and stored combustibles.
Managed zone • 5–30 feet

Space. Prune. Maintain.

Beyond the first five feet, the goal is to interrupt continuous fuel paths and reduce flame and radiant-heat exposure.

  • Space shrubs and trees.
  • Maintain vertical clearance and remove dead material.
  • Use paths, hardscape, and open space to break fuel continuity.
